Michael A. Elliott is the 20th President of Amherst College. He graduated summa cum laude from Amherst in 1992, earned his Ph.D. with distinction in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, and spent 24 years at Emory University, where he served as Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences. A scholar of American literature, Native American literature, and public history, he is the author of Custerology (University of Chicago Press). Under his presidency, Amherst launched the AI in the Liberal Arts Initiative (AILA), a Generative AI Task Force, and a college-wide AI Working Group.
