LocalStack Archives GitHub Repo, Now Requires Account to Run

LocalStack, a widely used open-source tool that emulates AWS services for local development and testing, archived its GitHub repository and moved to a model requiring users to create an account before running the software. The change drew immediate criticism from the developer community, which had relied on LocalStack as a free, self-hosted alternative to running tests against live AWS infrastructure. The tool is used by thousands of development teams to simulate S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, and other AWS services without incurring cloud costs. By requiring account creation, LocalStack is shifting from an open-source project to a commercial product with a free tier. Developers on Hacker News and GitHub pointed to the move as another example of open-source projects pulling up the ladder after building their user base on community contributions.
