OpenAI Petitions UK Regulator to Force Google to Include AI Chatbots in Search Choice Screen
OpenAI has filed a petition with the UK Competition and Markets Authority asking it to require Google to include AI chatbots alongside traditional search engines in the default search choice screen it must offer to Chrome and Android users.
The CMA mandated that Google display a default search engine choice screen as part of its market investigation into Google's search dominance. OpenAI argues that AI chatbots with search functionality now compete in the same market as traditional search engines and should receive equal access to the choice screen.
If the CMA agrees, ChatGPT and other AI search products could appear alongside Google Search, Bing, and DuckDuckGo when users set up new Android devices or Chrome browsers in the UK. The filing is one of the most direct attempts by an AI company to use competition law to break into the distribution channels that Google has long dominated.
