OpenAI Acquires Astral, Makers of Python Tools uv, Ruff, and ty

OpenAI announced it is acquiring Astral, the developer toolchain company behind uv, ruff, and ty, three widely adopted open-source Python tools covering dependency management, linting and formatting, and type checking. The Astral team, led by founder Charlie Marsh, will join OpenAI's Codex team. OpenAI said Codex now has more than 2 million users, a figure that has tripled since the start of 2026. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval. OpenAI said it will continue supporting uv, ruff, and ty as open-source projects after the deal closes, building alongside the broader Python community. The acquisition signals a strategic move: rather than building coding tools on top of Python, OpenAI is absorbing the tools that the Python ecosystem already depends on. Astral's products have become infrastructure for millions of developers and AI coding agents alike.
