Nvidia has made cuPhoton available as an open-source toolkit for loading, processing and analyzing scientific images on GPUs. Its components cover image alignment, subtraction and fitting, with workflows that scale from a single workstation to multiple GPUs and computing nodes.

Nvidia reports image loading and reading speedups of up to 14,900x and signal processing speedups of up to 14,550x on representative workloads involving hundreds of terabytes. These figures measure individual operations against an x86 CPU baseline, rather than an entire pipeline.

Version 0.1.3 supports Python 3.12-3.14 and CUDA 13 on Linux. Its astronomy image reader supports specified uncompressed and GZIP-compressed images, but excludes Rice compression and dithered floating-point quantization.
