Autonomous vehicle startups have raised a record $21.4 billion across 34 deals through mid-April, more than triple the $5.9 billion invested in all of 2025, according to Crunchbase data.

The surge represents a 262 percent increase from last year's total and comes as investors concentrate capital on a handful of companies they believe will dominate the market. Three firms. Waymo, Shield AI, and Wayve. accounted for the majority of funding.

Waymo's $16 billion Series D round in February made up three-quarters of the total raised so far this year. The Mountain View, California-based company reached a $126 billion valuation with backing from Alphabet, Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital.

Shield AI secured $2 billion in a Series G round co-led by Advent International and JP Morgan Chase, valuing the San Diego firm at $12.7 billion. London's Wayve raised $1.3 billion in Series D funding at an $8.6 billion valuation.

While North America remains the largest funding hub, Chinese startups recorded some of the largest rounds in 2025, including DeepBlue Auto's $897.7 million Series C and Neolix's $600 million Series D.

Two autonomous vehicle companies are preparing initial public offerings this year. Beijing-based Momenta confidentially filed for a Hong Kong IPO in March, seeking a valuation above $14 billion. Autonomous A2Z secured $24.7 million in pre-IPO funding in March and plans to list later this year.
