General Motors plans to invest more than $2 billion in the Lansing region over the next several years, including $1.25 billion to prepare its Delta Township assembly plant for future vehicle production, TechCrunch reported. GM intends to produce hybrid-electric vehicles at the factory.

The company is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to restructure a previously awarded $500 million manufacturing conversion grant for that purpose. The grant originally supported converting a different Lansing factory to electric-vehicle production; GM says the funds were never released.

Delta Township currently builds gasoline-powered Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia vehicles. GM has not specified when hybrid production or sales will begin.
