# US and China propose hotline for national-security AI incidents

The United States and China have proposed creating a notification channel for artificial-intelligence incidents that could threaten national security or be mistaken for an attack. The proposal would let either government warn the other about dangerous autonomous behavior and reduce the risk of machine-driven escalation before people can intervene.

The countries raised the idea after talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to discuss AI safeguards during a September 24 summit, with follow-up safety talks planned in two months. The hotline remains an early proposal, and China's willingness to implement it is unclear.
