Databricks says internal benchmarks show Lakebase Postgres loading 1 TB in less than 5 minutes by moving bulk ingestion to Spark, a distributed processing engine. The benchmark measures construction of database data pages; the company is still working on parallelizing index builds.

The approach powers Lakebase Synced Tables. Spark workers build Postgres-compatible pages and write them to shared storage, while the live database publishes the imported data in one transaction. Databricks says this keeps bulk loading from competing with application traffic. During beta, a customer loading about 1 billion rows daily had previously needed over 8 hours and heavily overprovisioned database resources.
