A study described a BioflexBot robotic-hand prototype that uses a coiled spring, constraining shell and compressed-air system with two pneumatic inputs.

The researchers reported demonstrations of pinching an acupuncture needle, moving liquid with a pipette, rotating a bottle cap, hooking objects and grasping objects of varying sizes. The report said the prototype extended and contracted 3.5 times more than a human hand and could grasp objects nearly 13 times bigger than similar systems.

Demonstrations included aeroengine-blade inspection, humanoid-robot tasks and a chemistry experiment.
