Researchers demonstrate offline multilingual voice assistant on Raspberry Pi

Researchers report that LUMO, an offline voice assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB of memory, can recognize speech, generate replies and speak them without a cloud connection. Its language model uses four-bit compression to fit on the device. In their preprint, the researchers report response times of 2.0 to 4.0 seconds and peak power use of approximately 9.0 W. They also report Bangla speech recognition. The measured 6.8% word error rate applies to short English utterances in low-noise conditions, limiting what that figure says about performance in other settings.
