Former soldier sentenced to 70 months for tech and telecom extortion
Image: Primary A former U.S. Army soldier has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for hacking and extorting at least 10 U.S. technology and telecommunications companies. Cameron John Wagenius was also ordered to pay $294,978 in restitution.
According to court documents cited by BleepingComputer, Wagenius and accomplices stole network login credentials, took company data and threatened to publish it unless victims paid. The group attempted to extort at least $1 million, the Justice Department said. Wagenius had pleaded guilty to charges tied to the intrusions and extortion; the sentence concerns attacks carried out between April 2023 and December 2024.
