# Linux and m1n1 changes enable native multicore boots on M4 Macs

Changes merged into mainline Linux and the m1n1 boot software allow their latest releases to boot Linux natively on M4 Macs with secondary processor cores enabled, developer Yureka Lilian reported. The changes avoid idle instructions that can erase processor register state and crash Linux on these chips.

The work enables a Linux shell with all cores usable, and the same workarounds have worked on M4 Pro, M4 Max and M5 chips. Peripheral support remains under development, including reverse engineering needed for components such as the built-in camera, display controller and graphics processor.
