MapQuest has added a Surveillance Layer to its mapping app that shows known license plate readers, including devices from Flock Safety and other manufacturers, Tom's Hardware reports. Users can enable the feature in Map Options to see camera locations and the directions they face.

The feature lets drivers identify cameras that automatically read vehicle plates and potentially avoid them. The origin of the location data is unclear, and heavy camera coverage near a destination can make avoidance impractical.
