Researchers from Imperial College London and collaborators report Clavina, a programmable photonic quantum computing architecture that combines linear and nonlinear quantum operations in one system, phys.org reported, citing a Nature Photonics study.

Traditional photonic setups are often built for a single task and need major hardware changes to tackle new problems. Clavina uses a central control unit to route information between a programmable optical network and specialized nonlinear modules so functions can be added without redesigning the whole machine, lead author Shang Yu said.

The team used the platform to simulate the Bose-Hubbard model of interacting quantum particles and demonstrated a more reliable route to Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill states used in error correction, which prior photonic methods produced only probabilistically. Raj Patel of Imperial said the nonlinear operations supply a universal gate set at the physical level needed for future bosonic error-correcting codes. The paper's DOI is 10.1038/s41566-026-01962-8.
