Google begins rolling out Gemini AI assistant to millions of vehicles

Google announced on Thursday that it will begin rolling out its Gemini conversational AI assistant to cars with Google built-in, expanding beyond the current Google Assistant. The rollout follows a separate announcement from General Motors on Wednesday that Gemini is coming to approximately 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 and newer, spanning Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. Google's announcement did not name specific automakers, suggesting the deployment will extend beyond GM's fleet. The update will begin in the United States with English-language support and will expand to additional languages and regions in the coming months. Compatible existing vehicles, not just new models, can receive Gemini through software updates. Cars with Google built-in first launched in 2020. Google says the upgrade enables drivers to interact with their vehicles more naturally. A driver could ask for a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along their route, and Gemini can pull suggestions from Google Maps and handle follow-up questions about parking availability or menu options, including dietary preferences. The assistant can also complete tasks like adjusting the climate controls, providing directions, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and helping drivers respond hands-free. Gemini Live, currently in beta, allows for more open-ended, real-time conversations activated by saying, "Hey Google, let's talk." Drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles will be prompted with the option to upgrade. Gemini can be accessed through voice commands, an on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls. Future updates are expected to deepen integration with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
