# SA-DPO preprint reports gains from adapting preference margins to response meaning

Researchers report that SA-DPO, a method for training language models to follow preferences, consistently outperformed DPO and SimPO in experiments on UltraFeedback and Argilla DPO-Mix-7k. The preprint reports a 58.5% head-to-head win rate in downstream generation quality.

The method adjusts the required confidence gap between preferred and rejected responses according to their semantic distance, aiming to prevent instability when responses have nearly identical meanings. The researchers also show that minimizing standard proxy training losses can leave ranking errors arbitrarily high under the mathematical conditions they examine. Their analysis identifies a tradeoff between the confidence margin needed for consistency and a model's finite capacity to satisfy it.
