# AI-flagged tidal disruption reveals million-solar-mass black hole 30,000 light-years off-center

Astronomers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill report a tidal disruption event about 30,000 light-years from a massive galaxy's center, exposing a roughly one-million-solar-mass wandering black hole, SciTechDaily reported of work in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Tidal disruption events occur when a star passes too close to a massive black hole and is torn apart. Such flares average about once every 100,000 years in a galaxy; more than 100 have been detected in the past decade, almost all at galactic centers. The event, labeled TDE 2025abcr, is described as the most distant offset yet recorded for a tidal disruption discovered with visible light.

Co-author Jonathan Carney said almost every prior tidal disruption was seen at galaxy centers, while this flare appeared tens of thousands of light-years away. The black hole may have been stranded after a galaxy merger or pushed outward by gravitational encounters near the center. Researchers used tdescore, an AI classifier adapted by Robert Stein at the University of Maryland and NASA Goddard to search away from galactic centers, then confirmed the event with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope in Chile.
