The Cherokee Nation announced Wednesday it will ban the construction of data centers on land within its reservation that is held in trust or tribally owned, citing the findings of a task force commissioned earlier this year.

Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said the task force found that data centers pose risks to the tribe's water supply and electrical grid. He said the facilities consume massive amounts of water and electricity while providing few jobs for Cherokee citizens.

The ban applies to new construction on trust land and tribally owned land. Existing facilities are not affected by the policy.
