GitHub says it has shipped an endpoint that returns up to 30 weeks of daily repository star counts per request without exposing user identities. It restores a way for maintainers and analytics tools to track project interest after GitHub restricted stargazer and watcher lists to repository administrators and collaborators.

The endpoint filters records by an indexed date range before counting them, reducing database work compared with repeatedly processing every current star. It still reflects current stars rather than a historical event log: removing a star deletes its record. Unusually dense weeks can also produce expensive queries.
