Caltech researchers say their ASTRA robot autonomously assembled an initial section of an antenna structure in space without astronaut assistance. The demonstration, part of DARPA's NOM4D program, tested a way to construct structures in orbit rather than launch them fully built or folded.

A manipulator takes struts and joints from dispensers and assembles repeating sections of a supporting truss. Ground engineers sent commands, checked downloaded photographs and tested fixes on a spare system on Earth when problems arose.

The intended reflector measures 1.4 meters in diameter. Time limitations prevented completion of the antenna, and the team considers completion of the full 11-section truss unlikely before the mission ends in December.
