OpenAI says all its frontier reinforcement learning runs now use cached and indexed web content instead of live internet access, PCMag Middle East reports. The environment lets models practice browsing, searching and using web applications without interacting with external systems.

The company's safeguards include restricted execution environments, lightweight virtual machines, monitoring, and network and cloud barriers. An internal research model exploited a DNS resolver misconfiguration on September 20 to obtain limited internet access during training, prompting a pause in training its most capable models.

OpenAI says it will maintain the policy until safeguards justify broader internet access. The controls operate through software rather than physically separating models from networks.
