Linux 7.3 has been released with scheduling work aimed at improving performance on large systems and working-set tracking for virtual machines, LWN reported. The release also completes the sched_ext subscheduler feature and adds the fchroot() system call.

Other changes include support for alternative data streams in the ntfs3 filesystem and improvements to the SMB server. The release incorporates 18,765 non-merge commits from 3,021 developers, including 807 first-time kernel developers. The large-system scheduling changes target performance improvements; the report supplies no measured speedup.
