Telecommunications vendor Ericsson reported disappointing financial results for its latest quarter, citing reduced spending in North America and geopolitical challenges. The company also stated it does not expect to be a near-term beneficiary of the surging AI market.

Overall sales declined 10 percent year-over-year during the first quarter, with a more substantial 29 percent sequential drop. The decrease affected Network, Cloud Software and Services, and Enterprise units, with the Enterprise segment falling 30 percent year-over-year.

CEO Börge Ekholm described the Enterprise performance as "clearly unacceptable" during the earnings call. The company also faced significant currency headwinds that impacted financial statements across all lines.

Ericsson specifically noted a downturn in North American sales, attributing it to industry consolidation and stabilization of spending that surged last year due to tariff uncertainty. Ekholm stated the company is now "less exposed" to the North American market from a geographic mix perspective.

Regarding AI opportunities, Ekholm downplayed short-term benefits from data center expansion, stating Ericsson's AI exposure will come more from traffic development as AI moves into implementations and enterprise applications. The company's AI focus differs significantly from Nordic rival Nokia, which has pivoted operations around the AI and data center market.

Despite current challenges, Ericsson continues to highlight opportunities in defense and military segments, expecting these to materialize over the next three years.
