The National Kidney Foundation announced an investment in Nephrogen to support its kidney gene therapy delivery platform and lead program for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Nephrogen combines artificial intelligence with high-throughput screening to discover vehicles that carry genetic medicines into kidney cells. The company reported delivery to as much as 60% of kidney tubular epithelial cells in preclinical mouse models, in work under peer review, and demonstrated gene delivery in intact human kidneys maintained outside the body by machine perfusion.

Its second program targets APOL1-mediated kidney disease. No gene therapy has been approved for kidney disease.
