A cross-party group of British peers and MPs plans to require technology companies to install software on smartphones and tablets sold in Britain to block child sexual abuse material, The Observer reported. The proposal would cover AI-generated images and videos, with older devices potentially covered through mandatory software updates.

Conservative peer John Nash is leading the campaign in the Lords, while former safeguarding minister Jess Phillips is leading it in the Commons. Nash said he would introduce an amendment, probably to the forthcoming national security bill, if ministers do not legislate. The government has separately promised legislation requiring Apple and Google to prevent children from taking, sharing or viewing nude images.
