Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach affecting the company behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, stating that attackers demanded ransom payment In a statement posted to its official channels, Rockstar acknowledged the intrusion but emphasized that game systems, player accounts, and ongoing development projects including Grand Theft Auto 6 remained secure. The company declined to pay the ransom and is working with cybersecurity firms and law enforcement to investigate the incident. The breach comes nearly three years after a similar 2022 attack in which a teenage hacker stole early development footage of GTA 6 and released it online. That attacker was later arrested and sentenced under the UK's Computer Misuse Act. Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive saw no immediate stock movement following the disclosure. The gaming industry has faced a wave of ransomware attacks in 2025 and 2026, with attackers targeting both development assets and player databases to extract payment. The company said it has reinforced its security infrastructure following the detection of the breach and advised employees to monitor for suspicious account activity.
