Mozilla plans JPEG XL default support in Firefox 157
Mozilla developer Timothy Nikkel said Firefox 157 is intended to enable JPEG XL decoding by default on all platforms. The Rust-based jxl-rs decoder is currently enabled by default only in Nightly and available through a Firefox Labs checkbox on other channels. Mozilla says the implementation supports animation and progressive display, while planned multithreaded-decoding patches are still expected to land. HDR JPEG XL images will display as SDR.
