Finnish police have opened a criminal investigation into Google subsidiary Tuike Finland Oy over suspected environmental law breaches at its Muhos data center project, Tom's Hardware reported, citing a police statement published Friday. Police received five complaints and are also investigating drainage and water management shortcomings.

The investigation has backing from Finland's Licensing and Supervision Authority. Google representatives previously apologized for unauthorized clearing that affected 816 acres of forest near Muhos. A Google representative said the company would cooperate with police. The suspected offenses remain under investigation.
