# CenterPoint confirms customer-data security incident

CenterPoint Energy disclosed in an SEC filing that it became aware of an online post claiming to hold a dataset containing customer information.

The utility said an unauthorized third party accessed customer data through an external system and that outside experts are determining the incident's scope. A hacker claimed to have obtained 7.49 million lines of data, but CenterPoint did not verify that figure. The company said electric and gas delivery remain operational and that it will notify affected customers and regulators as required.
