A breach exposed sensitive personal information about nearly every FBI employee and thousands of local law-enforcement officials assigned to FBI task forces, six current and former FBI officials told MS NOW.

Cybersecurity experts said ShinyHunters entered through FBIJobs.gov by exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in Oracle PeopleSoft, software used to manage human resources. Two cybersecurity experts said the attackers found a way around a patch the FBI had applied after a public warning from Google's threat intelligence experts in June.

The current and former officials said the hackers did not penetrate the FBI's core investigative network or classified systems.
