Cloudflare says five changes to the in-memory representation of its DNS cache cut per-entry memory use by more than half across the platform behind 1.1.1.1 and several other DNS services. The company says the work freed roughly 100 terabytes of memory across its fleet, while cache insert throughput rose 43% and lookup latency fell 19%. The changes include replacing expandable storage with fixed-size storage and changing how records are represented.
