Variational AI announced a collaboration with Merck to design and optimize small molecule drug candidates against two undisclosed targets. The agreement gives Merck exclusive rights to develop and commercialize compounds arising from the work.

Variational AI will receive an upfront payment and is eligible for milestones, with a total potential deal value of up to USD$349 million. It will use a version of its Enki platform fine-tuned on Merck's proprietary data to generate and optimize candidates for Merck's designated targets.
