LF Energy and LF Research released a benefit-cost framework intended to help grid operators, regulators and energy stakeholders compare open-source software with conventional procurement.

The Linux Foundation project says the framework evaluates total cost of ownership, risk exposure, strategic value and societal impact. In synthetic simulations and three real-world case studies, LF Energy says open-source approaches produced two to five times greater net value than existing procurement approaches. The group positions the methodology as a way to support procurement and policy decisions with measurable evidence.
