Waymo, the autonomous vehicle unit of Alphabet Inc., announced Wednesday that it will expand its fully driverless robotaxi service to four new U.S. cities: Las Vegas, Nevada; Denver, Colorado; San Diego, California; and Tampa, Florida. The rollout will begin with rides for company employees before opening to the public in the coming months, the company said. The expansion builds on Waymo's position as the largest robotaxi operator in the country. The company already runs a fully autonomous, driverless service around the clock in more than 10 U.S. metro areas, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix, the Los Angeles region, Miami, Orlando, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas. Waymo said its fleet has grown to roughly 3,000 vehicles, backed by $16 billion in fresh capital, as the company works toward a stated goal of 1 million weekly rides in 2026. Riders in Las Vegas will be among the first to experience the Ojai, a newly introduced vehicle that the company describes as designed for added passenger comfort. Waymo also said it has begun testing its sixth-generation autonomous driving system in Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles as part of its broader push to expand the driverless fleet. The company pointed to its safety record to support the expansion. A recent analysis of more than 220 million fully autonomous miles found Waymo vehicles were involved in 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries, 82% fewer crashes involving a deployed airbag, and 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury, compared with human drivers. Waymo described its approach as phased and community-focused, noting that each new market undergoes months of supervised testing, with trained specialists behind the wheel, before the company removes human oversight entirely. No public launch dates have been announced for the four new markets.
