A board-certified toxicologist writing for The Conversation explains that everyday exposure to PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as forever chemicals, is nearly unavoidable, but the health risk comes from the cumulative mixture of low-level exposures rather than any single chemical. Air, food, household products, and drinking water all contribute to a background burden of PFAS and other synthetic chemicals that overlap in ways regulators rarely assess.

Indoor air can differ from outdoor air because of cooking, cleaning products, building materials, and chemical reactions inside enclosed spaces. Food often carries residues from multiple pesticides. Cleaning products, cosmetics, and personal care items add fragrances, preservatives, and other ingredients to the mix. The toxicologist emphasizes that decades of research on individual chemicals have identified hazards and set exposure limits, but people are rarely exposed to one chemical at a time.

Practical steps to reduce the cumulative load include filtering drinking water with activated carbon or reverse osmosis, choosing cookware without nonstick coatings, minimizing use of stain- and water-resistant treatments on fabrics, and ventilating indoor spaces during and after cleaning. The goal is not to eliminate all chemical exposure, which is impossible, but to lower the total mixture burden where feasible choices exist.
