# CenterPoint confirms customer data theft from external system

CenterPoint Energy confirmed in an SEC filing that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to some customers through an external-facing system. The utility is investigating the scope and plans to notify customers and regulators as required. CenterPoint said electric and gas services were not affected and that it does not expect a material effect on its business or financial condition. A threat actor had alleged stealing 7.49 million customer records, but CenterPoint did not confirm that count.
