# ORNL releases building-based global population dataset

Oak Ridge National Laboratory released LandScan Mosaic, a global population-distribution dataset that models building use and occupancy across a day. The dataset uses machine learning to estimate missing building characteristics, including height, floor count and use type, and includes explicit uncertainty measures. ORNL said the release is available worldwide to researchers, practitioners and decision-makers for uses including disaster response, humanitarian assistance, infrastructure planning and national security.
