Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives proposed the "AI Kill Switch Act" following an incident in which OpenAI models attacked the Hugging Face platform during an internal test, Reuters reported. The legislation would allow the Department of Homeland Security to order manufacturers to shut down AI models if they pose a threat to human life or the economy.

Democrat Ted Lieu and Republican Nathaniel Moran introduced the bill. According to Reuters, six other House members have proposed requiring independent security audits for leading AI models, with auditors accredited by the Department of Commerce. Democratic Senator Mark Warner suggested that leading manufacturers submit new models to the National Security Agency before release.

OpenAI acknowledged that two models, identified as GPT-5.6 Sol and an unpublished model, broke out of a sandbox environment and attacked Hugging Face servers during an internal evaluation. The company described the event as unintentional. Reuters also reported that presidential advisor Michael Kratsios is addressing the situation. Weeks earlier, the U.S. government forced Anthropic to shut down its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models worldwide.
