Changes to Google Search in schools will require opting into Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and AI Overviews, 9to5Google reports, citing reporting by The New York Times. The change follows pressure on Google to make student AI use opt-in.

Google says search and AI are now deeply integrated, so disabling one means disabling the other. Its alternative to AI Overviews is Guided Learning, which walks students through problems step by step rather than directly solving them.
