OpenAI has introduced a new Chronicle feature for its Codex desktop app on Mac, allowing the AI system to use recent screen content to better understand user context.

Chronicle builds on Codex's existing memory capabilities by analyzing screen captures to comprehend references to on-screen elements like errors, open documents, or past projects. The feature helps Codex learn user workflows, preferred tools, and recurring projects over time.

As a research preview available to Codex Pro subscribers, Chronicle runs background agents that capture screen content temporarily stored on the device. Users can inspect and edit the generated memories, though OpenAI notes other applications may access these files.

Privacy controls allow users to pause or disable Chronicle at any time from the Codex menu bar, but OpenAI warns the feature consumes rate limits quickly in its current implementation.

Enabling Chronicle requires activating the Memories feature in Codex settings, then turning on Chronicle, granting macOS Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions, and completing a consent process. The feature represents a step in OpenAI's plan to expand Codex beyond agentic coding for software engineers into a broader tool for various types of builders.
