NASA opens state bidding for U.S. Space Academy with 2027 groundbreaking target

NASA published a Request for Information on Thursday inviting governors or their designees to propose hosting and sponsoring the new United States Space Academy, following the first meeting of the Presidential Commission on Sept. 9. The commission, chaired by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, has a 120-day mandate running from the Aug. 28 executive order that created the academy. Each state gets one submission, due by 6 p.m. EDT Oct. 26, covering location, site readiness, environmental and regulatory considerations, and supporting ecosystems. NASA's stated timeline calls for groundbreaking no later than 2027, temporary hosting of 300 students in 2028, and a permanent location operating by 2031.
