An international team led by Shing-Chi Leung of SUNY Polytechnic Institute and Kavli IPMU reports that primordial black holes may trigger some white dwarfs to explode as Type Ia supernovae, ScienceDaily reported, citing a paper in The Astrophysical Journal.

Primordial black holes are hypothesized early-universe remnants sometimes proposed as dark matter candidates. Earlier work by the group argued that a black hole passing through a white dwarf could raise tidal forces strong enough to set off a runaway thermonuclear explosion resembling standard Type Ia events.

In the new study, the researchers compared models with remnants such as Tycho, Kepler, and 3C 397, nearby supernovae including SN 2011fe and SN 2012cg, and chemical abundances of Milky Way stars, examining isotopes such as Ni-56 and Ni-57 and stable Mn and Ni. ScienceDaily says their analysis indicates a non-zero fraction of primordial-black-hole-triggered Type Ia events may be needed to explain an observed galactic chemical abundance trend.
