Microsoft announced a four-year, $10 billion investment package in Japan on Thursday, partnering with SoftBank and domestic cloud provider Sakura Internet to expand AI data infrastructure across the country, Bloomberg reported. The investment includes building out data center capacity and cloud services to support Japan's growing demand for AI compute, as well as a commitment to train one million AI engineers in the country over the investment period. SoftBank's involvement deepens the relationship between the two companies; SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has been closely aligned with the broader US AI buildout following his involvement in the Stargate initiative announced earlier this year. Japan has become a priority market for US technology companies seeking to diversify AI infrastructure beyond the United States and Europe. The country's government has made AI a central pillar of its economic strategy and has actively courted foreign investment in digital infrastructure, offering incentives to companies willing to build domestically. Sakura Internet, a Japanese cloud provider, has received government subsidies to expand its GPU cluster capacity as part of national AI ambitions. Microsoft's partnership with the company signals an intent to operate alongside domestic players rather than compete directly. The $10 billion figure places Japan among Microsoft's largest country-specific AI commitments alongside recent announcements for Germany, France, and the United States. Microsoft has pledged roughly $80 billion in AI infrastructure investment globally for fiscal year 2026.
