The International Monetary Fund warned that intertwined AI investments and revenue commitments could amplify a correction in AI stocks and debt. Its Global Financial Stability Report reviewed 14 publicly disclosed deals since 2023, identifying $1.4tn in future revenue commitments through services or chip orders.

The risk arises when investments in AI firms lose value at the same time that revenue promised by those firms deteriorates. The IMF said the biggest data centre operators now issue 10% of the world's investment-grade bonds, compared with less than 1% in 2024. It urged authorities to curb excessive borrowing behind AI bets, including through limits on margin loans, geared exchange-traded products and derivatives.
