Xcimer Energy says it has finalized an agreement for up to $30.5 million in additional funding through the Department of Energy's Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. The October 6 announcement covers the program's second budget period and raises potential DOE milestone payments to Xcimer to $39.5 million. The Denver company is developing a fusion-power laser architecture using gas lasers, gas optics and two beamlines. Its Phoenix laser system began operations in June to demonstrate elements of that design. Xcimer targets electricity delivery to the grid in the mid-2030s; the new funding is tied to milestone payments.
