Foxconn confirmed that some of its North American factories were hit by a cyberattack earlier this week. The world's largest electronics manufacturer said the attack affected its operations.

The Nitrogen ransomware group claimed responsibility for the incident. The group said it stole 8TB of data and over 11 million documents from Foxconn's systems.

Foxconn has over 900,000 employees in 24 countries and manufactures products for customers including Apple, Nvidia, Google, AMD, and Intel. The Nitrogen group alleges the stolen data is tied to those major customers.

The Nitrogen ransomware operation was first identified in 2023. It typically targets mid-sized operations that are large enough to have a supply chain impact but may have security gaps due to limited resources.

IANS Faculty Ismael Valenzuela said Nitrogen often uses malicious online ads to lure users into downloading trojanized software. Once inside, the group follows a consistent playbook of stealing data before encrypting systems, Valenzuela said.

IANS Faculty members warned that ransomware attacks targeting supply chains will continue to increase because downtime at manufacturers makes attacks more damaging for victims and more profitable for threat actors.
