GitHub said its new token-based billing system for Copilot went live today, replacing the flat premium-request model with AI Credits that cost $0.01 each and are consumed by every token processed. The change affects 4.7 million paid subscribers. Base subscription prices remain unchanged, with Copilot Pro at $10 per month, Pro+ at $39, Business at $19 per user, and Enterprise at $39 per user. Those prices now define a monthly credit allowance. Code completions and Next Edit Suggestions remain free and unlimited. Chat, agent mode, Copilot CLI, and Copilot Spaces now draw from the credit pool based on tokens consumed at published API rates. The fallback to a lower-cost model after exhausting premium requests has been removed. Community reports project cost increases of 10x to 50x for developers running agentic coding sessions. A $10 Pro plan includes 1,000 AI credits. A single agentic session with a frontier model can consume 30 to 40 credits, according to reports in GitHub's official community thread. Annual plan holders remain on the legacy system until expiration but face higher model multipliers effective June 1.
