# AWS extends Lambda SnapStart to container-image functions

_Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 5:00 AM EDT · Infrastructure · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

AWS said Lambda SnapStart is now available for functions packaged as container images. The opt-in feature snapshots an initialized execution environment during deployment, caches it and resumes it on invocation, which AWS says can reduce startup times from several seconds to as low as sub-second. SnapStart had previously been limited to managed Python, .NET and Java runtimes. The container-image capability is available in commercial AWS Regions except New Zealand and Taipei.
