Boston Dynamics has announced an updated Atlas robot hand that it says can reposition objects, recover from slipping grips and operate industrial tools. The four-finger design has 13 degrees of freedom, direct joint actuation and pressure sensors across the fingertips and palm.

An opposable thumb has four degrees of freedom. The slightly larger-than-human hand is designed to use tools and reach into spaces built for people while supporting heavy industrial and logistics tasks.

The company says removing a fifth finger reduces complexity, cost, volume and potential failure points. The design also supports training manipulation skills in simulation before deploying them on hardware.
